Dave Waldrup Joins FortiusOne
June 4, 2008
FortiusOne, a leader in next-generation Intelligent Mapping solutions that make the World’s geographic data accessible to everyone for learning, decision making, and problem solving, announced that Dave Waldrup is joining the executive team as VP of Product Management and Marketing.
Waldrup brings over 30 years of combined government and commercial experience where he worked extensively incorporating Semantic Web and knowledge management capabilities within Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
“FortiusOne’s disruptive technological innovations are blazing the trail toward the next generation of mapping,” said Waldrup. “By marrying the very best of GIS and the Geo and Semantic Web, FortiusOne is enabling people to visualize and use maps in entirely new ways. I’m excited to help lead the charge.”
Dave has had great success working within the Department of Defense, the Intelligence Community and worldwide commercial business. He has developed and managed technical programs in support of GIS and other initiatives within NGA and most recently served as a Senior Principal Business Developer in Knowledge Management where he developed and implemented the concept of Knowledge Management within Geospatial Intelligence Systems.
As an outside consultant, Waldrup was also an integral leader in the integration of the Semantic Web-Enabled Capability concept in coordination with The New School on their Geospatial and Media Tool (GMT) which was demonstrated to numerous high-level NGA, NATO, and other intelligence agency seniors with their enthusiastic acceptance and approval.
“Dave brings a wealth of invaluable knowledge and experience to FortiusOne,” said Sean Gorman, CEO and founder. “He reinforces our mission to create exciting and innovative applications that enable geospatial knowledge creation and discovery by everyone. Dave is a great addition to the FortiusOne team.”
FortiusOne was spun out of George Mason University in 2005 by a group of recognized experts in complexity science, large-scale data analysis, and public policy. The emergence of Web mapping and other Web 2.0 innovations inspired FortiusOne to invent new technologies to address the limitations of traditional analytic tools and the challenges in finding adequate data to solve real-world problems.
Joined by successful pioneers from the networking, Web services, and social networking markets, FortiusOne pursues its mission to make the World’s data accessible and easy to use.
“By joining our team, Dave has validated FortiusOne’s value proposition,” said Chris Marentis, COO and President of FortiusOne. “His breadth of knowledge and experience in this market confirms the real value in our core technologies. With Dave’s extensive experience, we can continue to build toward the next evolution of the web.”

The 5th Annual European Semantic Web Conference
June 3, 2008
The vision of the Semantic Web is to enhance today’s Web by exploiting machine-processable metadata. The explicit representation of the semantics of data, enriched with domain theories (ontologies), will enable a web that provides a qualitatively new level of service. It will weave together a large network of human knowledge and makes this knowledge machine-processable. Various automated services will help the users to achieve their goals by accessing and processing information in machine-understandable form.

Tim Berners Lee on the Semantic Web
June 3, 2008
Sir Tim Berners Lee is the Director of the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), which oversees the Web’s continued development.
In 1989, whilst working at CERN (which was the largest Internet node in Europe) Tim Berners Lee saw an opportunity to join hypertext with the Internet: “I just had to take the hypertext idea and connect it to the Transmission Control Protocol and domain name system ideas and — ta-da! — the World Wide Web.”
In this video he outlines his thoughts on the progression of the World Wide Web to the Semantic Web… for wich he sees a VERY exciting long term!
